Christmas is almost here and there is nothing we can do to avoid the colorful decorations, the family dinners, the lights… but there is something that we can do for getting a slightly more “our” Christmas…
(hope they dont mind)
Getting a gothic Christmas decoration is not going to be an easy task, specially if we want it to be a good decoration… we are going to have to use all our imagination and probably to online buying (No, I’m not trying to sell you anything, I don’t sell this stuff… yet…) For doing my gothic decoration I have planned the following strategy, what I’m going to do is to replace the typical Christmas decoration (that anybody would recognize as Christmas themed) for some other stuff… more of our style, more gothic. And for doing that I will start with the Christmas tree, and when I end with it, not even its mother it’s going to be able to recognize it. Let’s get to work: The first step it’s simple, you have to get a black Christmas tree, luckily for us you can buy one of those in most of the places in which you can buy a standard Christmas tree, the reason is that somehow black trees are quite “elegant” in standard fashion terms. This trees are made of plastic so you can save it for following years, mine has some optic fibers which send changing color lights all around the tree, well, you can switch on or off the tree depending on what you are looking for. The tree decoration requires a little bit more of work and imagination, you can limit yourself to place some black and white balls, that’s going to be quite gothic on it´s own and no one is going to look at you as if you were crazy, but if you want something better… I found some stuff in Amazon that you might want to add to your decoration. This are some black stalactites, some black balls and some silver/gray/black stuff, here are some images:
In traditional decoration, it’s quite common to surround the tree with some short of lace… For being honest, I’m not sure how to call it, I normally call it “that long stuff over there”, there isn’t any problem on adding one, I personally like the red one, red over black looks great and it’s quite easy to find. I’m not sure if it happens in your family too buy my grandmother loves to places little angels over the tree, flying with their white wings while they play the harp… well I offer you some alternative:
They look so cute… We also have the feminine version, in this case we can hang over the tree some devils vampires etc… all of them seems to be saying “I’m going to eat you alive, but hey, don’t be sad, it’s Christmas…”
With all this I think we have enough stuff for decorating the tree, now let’s look at the rest of the already scared house. There is people who love to hang stuff over closets or wardrobes, well I searched for some substitutes and found one that I love…
Three or four crows strategically placed will do great… We can also find a substitute for those balls that hangs all over the place, In deed skulls looks quite like a ball and you can find them in different colors as well. If you are lucky enough for having a chimney then you have another “hot spot” for decoration, it’s quite easy to give a fireplace a gothic look, I would use one of those green garland that are usually used for decoration during Christmas and then add some small special element so when you look it from far it looks normal but when you get closer it reveals its true nature. I would add some small half hiding plastic spiders or beetles… Another option is to change the full garland for one of those white spider webs that are commonly used in Halloween, this has a problem that I will explain later. In some cases those green garland comes with red sleeves that looks like Easter plants… I’m not sure if you ever had a carnivorous plant but they are quite small (as a big eastern sleeve) and they are partially red as well… they also have the funny thing that… you have to feed it, just as the rest of the family… (they aren’t hard to get).
I don’t have much more ideas to share with you, just add two advices. The first one is related with the white spider web I mentioned above, Christmas is not Halloween, if we use well known Halloween decoration people will get confused and will send us strange looks (as if they wouldn’t otherwise…) The second is that you “don’t have to go to far”, the trick for a good gothic Christmas decoration is that the overall look, really looks like a Christmas decoration and only when you pay attention to the details you really notice that things are not always what they seem to be.
