In Spain we say something that should be something like “what it’s promised it’s debt” and even I’m a little bit late… here it is. Last Saturday I told you tat I first meet “Glow” in a place that I really liked even it not being specially Goth, that’s why today we talk about…
El café de las artes. Theatre (Santander, Spain)
Santander it’s a very traditional town, it’s common to meet old people with really traditional ideas that will stare at you if they see you wearing clothes that they wouldn’t but for their grandchildren. That’s why discovering places like this in this city, devoted to new ideas and new artistic tendencies it’s something special. Even it not being specially Goth this place it’s enough open minded to admit, appreciate and enjoy some of the aspects of our gothic culture. That’s why I bring to you this article, specially dedicated to people that, like me, lives in small towns with the intention of you staring to see places like this like the option that you were seeking for being able to organize your artistic and gothic shows. (Gothic belly dance? Anyone?) “El café de las artes” was born as an initiative of several international artists with the intention of offering Santander a location for an alternative scenic theatre in which offering shows of tendencies that are a little bit out of what it’s common. That’s why this theatre offers a new programming, something different and oriented to new genres, new public and, why not say it, try to help new artist in developing their skills.
Their ideology is that culture is the base for every human society and therefore is needed to develop activities that grant people access to new art forms and knowledge. That’s why the “Café de las artes” is a crossroad where people, ideas, cultures meet and a forum for the interchange of experience and where artist of all around the world and tendencies has the opportunity of letting people know about their job and meet their public. And well, there is no reason why gothic culture can’t take part in this culture sharing. We could think that this place is only a place where artist came and perform their spectacle but sincerely is way much more, this is am open place where propose, create and develop activities that at best are “hard” to find in other places like poem reading, magic festivals or taking acrobatic trapeze classes…
It was in this place where thanks to the invisible concerts I first meet Glow, invisible concerts are concerts that you know “where and when” they take place but you have no clue on who is going to perform that night.
And that’s why in this place you can find pieces of art suitable for everyone, for example, checking the program for august 2010 I saw an activity called something that in English would sound like “sounds in darkness”, a musical event that consist in the creation of several feelings and emotions by the reproduction of different sounds in the most absolute darkness.
I have to say that the ambient of this place is certainly unique, in deed it doesn’t have much things to envy to lot of gothic places that I visited in the past, fur sure it lacks that “last touch” but it’s tall and dark walls, with dark screens, low blue and red lights, half hangings trapezes and it’s collection of old chairs mixed with a decorating leafless tree, some armless and headless dummies sited over a chair as if they were watching the spectacle…. Create a really spectacular ambient.
Let me add a few spider webs, some torn curtain, a iron cage or two with some candle simulating lights and we would have the perfect gothic local.
I know this place is not gothic by itself, but for me this kind of places are art by themselves and as a art lover I think that you’ll know how to appreciate this kind of places.
Hope that you liked it as much as I did.
