ACTUALIZATION (26-11-2010):

When I wrote this article I didn´t found a video with a male gothic belly dancer, but today and thanks to the other article that I wrote today I remembered that and searched for it again… This time I have been luckier and here it comes what I would quialify as pure and unadultered art… It´s not easy to do what this guy does for several reasons, hope you enjoy this video as much as I did…

Original article:

If there is something that you can say about belly dance without being in an error is that it has a special spirit that made it last over the decades and centuries to modern ages, that’s certainly something curious since most traditional dances are mostly that, traditional in the best of the cases, and completely forgotten in the worst of them.

However belly dance fate was different, it stayed with us (with more or less incidence) and became one of the few Arabic culture aspects that was able to root into occidental culture gathering cultures and creating social tendencies… and well, creating new form of dances as well.

gothic belly dance

An example of this creative union is the gothic belly dance that includes the best of its parents and at same time exudes a unique spirit.

Gothic belly dance joins the styling of gothic culture with the beautifulness and expressivity of the Middle Eastern dance, it’s a fact that Goth people are lovers of art and beauty in all forms, so it’s not strange that at some point there were some kind of meeting between the Goth movement and belly dance.

Gothic style embraces Victorian epoch, renaissance, punk movement, cyber and even has some ancient ethnic tendencies keeping special case in keeping it’s own identity and a dramatic look.

Without doubt that’s the perfect mix for bringing belly dance to a new level of evolution and here is where gothic belly dance is born.

-         A form of expression

Gothic belly dancers employ a wide arrange of movements that come directly from belly dance, but they usually create a special aura around the representation.

That aura is generated in the fact that while belly dance pretends to be a sensual dance, the gothic version of it pretends to transmit other emotions (that doesn’t mean that they leave aside the sensual aspect), in that way, it employ movements that seems to be more the trance of the dancer than any real dance, special facial or corporal expression that have nothing in common with those used by the traditional dancers, using the floor as choreographic element or the introduction of ritual components.

There are also industrial or cyber approaches to this type of dance that will incorporate more modern movements and usually commons in modern discos or pubs.

In that way, gothic belly dance it’s a unique entity by own right. It’s not only to dress in some short of gothic clothes and perform a belly dance. It also requires the existence of a third element in the form of theatrical sense of high emotional intensity with dramatic touches that generate a special and unique ambient.

¿how does the dancer gets to the state that allows creating that special spirit in the scene?

That type of dance requires the dancer to establish a special connection with the music, not only by practicing the movements but thought a subconscious instinct that emphasize the feelings that music creates, it requires to perfectly known her own body and to establish a connection between body, spirit and soul, it also requires to allow a spontaneous interaction between music and dancers, in most occasions, specially in solo scenes, that’s way much more important that follow a specific choreography.

A common mistake is to believe that gothic belly dancers are tribal dances, While that’s mostly true specially in Mediterranean countries there are other places in which the cabaret style is almost the only one that is able to be found, there is also a more complex concept that it’s a mix of both that could be called something like Tribaret.

It’s possible that this tribaret is the most common variation over gothic belly dance, but it’s not the only one, there is nothing more effective than leaving something in the hands of Goth people of having them twisting it by creative means and create a infinite amount of variations.

That’s how we have some variations like the burlesque style adding renaissance tendencies, or vampire style adding specific clothing or choreographies, priestess style includes ritual concepts, or cyber, techno or industrial style that pulls something as antique as belly dance to the future.
