I’m not sure this is going to be the last article about this theme because after writing it… It didn’t left me quite satisfied with the result… anyway I wanted to write something about this issue: we all know that being Goth its not a fashion issue but a way of life and sooner or later we all want to give our home the proper look… funds allowing… so today we talk about…

Gothic Bedroom Decoration

The most essential thing when thinking on any room decoration is the general color of it, the best thing that could happen is that we live  in a stone house, which is not going to be the case, if it were, the best we could do is to decorate our room in a medieval way (grey colors with iron and wood furniture), even if it’s only for not missing the opportunity of being able of doing it, since that’s not the most probable scenario…

…When we think in goth the first color that comes to our mind is usually black… although I don’t see anything wrong in a black room, maybe we can find a better color.

The definitive color for our room depends on each one but maybe we can think in bloody red tones, purple or dark blues tones in those cases the black presence fits awesome in the ceiling (walls of the choose color with black ceiling).

Once you have chosen the color you should paint the room and then attack the functional things that any room should have if you want to live in it:

Bed, one or more wardrobe, bedside table, light, shelves, drawers… It’s possible to find all that furniture that individually are gothic, but it’s a little bit harder that all together give a good general look, the idea here is to try to keep a more or less settled decoration line avoiding “cool” elements that don’t follow the general aspect of the room.

I’m not quite sure how to explain that idea so I will give you an example: Personally I like metal, forged stuff, in that way I would choose the bedside table , headboard, selves holder and lamps that are made of forged metal creating that global aspect for the room.

Logically there are elements that can’t follow the general line (I haven’t seen any wardrobe made of metal) in those cases you should chose pieces that follow the general line by small details (big hinges made of forged metal for example).

Once we have all “the basics” and we are sure that our room is functional and keep the general decoration line we can focus again in decoration itself.

Rooms need of a focus point, some point that is the center of the energy that emanate from the room, in bedrooms the most common element for that role is the bed, basically because it’s the biggest element, although depending on how we set up the room it might be a chimney (if we are lucky enough to have one) or a big wardrobe.

We have to identify that point and make it “wonderful” in the case of the bed that can be easily achieved by choosing the adequate bedclothes, in most cases a black quilt is enough,

But we can choose that effect by a twist of the global decoration line, for example including in the center of the room a big white bed with a white and silky canopy, in general, the biggest the room, the more it tolerate this kind of “radical changes” and still keep the general decoration line, we shouldn’t let the white bed to eclipse the general aspect of the room or we would be creating a little aberration.

In case that you want to create a different focus point… you’ll have to use your imagination :P.

We already have the general tone, the functional part of the room and the focus point, now we only have to add “the rest” of the stuff, from now on you will have more liberty on choosing stuff without breaking the enchant but if you want some ideas…

A self full of gloomy dolls always fit perfectly, particularly I find the image of a doll just over the self holder (or hanging from it) beautiful.

Black curtains are always wonderful, but sadly they aren’t quite practical, the room is going to be dark because of being painted in dark colors, if you also add black curtains you will have problems for getting an adequate natural light in the room, a good solution for this is to use a set of torn curtains, torn curtains could give your room the look that you are searching without removing the needed light.

Screens: a dark room is always disturbing, but even more disturbing is that part of it is hidden from your line of sight, screens are able to create that felling perfectly, the only problem is that screens are big and they will compete for the focus point of the room, we have to chose them carefully so they don’t set themselves as the focus point of the room (unless they want them to be, of course).

Books, culture: it’s sad but most bedrooms don’t have a place for literature. Art and culture are important part of the gothic culture and therefore a self of old books (or even a small pile of disordered books over a table) will fit perfectly.

Light points: For the sake of your eye caring I would recommend a good source of light, the best is to have a good ceiling lamp that lights correctly all the room, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t add a secondary set of lighting for when it’s not needed to see that much… candles, bedside table lamps with low or twinkling light, black light focusing to the ceiling… are all options.

Until here my ideas, if you want to add something more please do so, as I said I’m not completely satisfied with this decoration guide but I hope you like it and hope it serve as some kind of guide, maybe next time we can think in the rest of the house.

For curtains, you may go with black, however, as you mentioned there may not be enough sunlight. An alternative would be going to the fabric store and custom-making your own curtains out of a black translucent material: something gauzy or lacy works splendidly.

I agree that displaying literature and culture are another wonderful addition but I think one should also consider displaying any unique hobbies one might have. I have some of my hand-carved feather quills on display along with some of my scalpels from my past dissection classes. I also like to knit and crochet so I have some of the amigurumi skull-stuffed toys and spider-lace shawls that I've made on display as well.

 one way to have black curtains without sacrificing the natural light is to have thick black black-out curtains (ones that don't let light through for those that don't like lots of light in the morning) that you can tie back when you want the light and let loose when you don't. underneath the black-out curtains you could have the torn curtains mentioned above.
