Today i bring to you a new article about gothic culture, it’s an extension of another article that we published some months ago about weeding dresses (HERE) today we talk about…

Gothic Weddings

We, gothic people, are in general people that enjoy art, the aesthetic is important for us and in consonance we use to dress and live as we want without thinking in what other people could think about us.

In the end that creates a problem with the rest of the society, people that don’t understand (and never tried to) why someone dress in a fashion completely different of the rest of the herd.

Unfortunately for us that creates a discrimination against any gothic pair that want a gothic Christian wedding, most clerics will deny a Christian wedding of such characteristics.

That makes lot of Christian gothic people to celebrate 2 weddings, one for accomplish with their religious believes and another for having the feeling of a gothic wedding.

I have never meet god in person but… in my opinion… I don’t think that god will mind a lot about the kind of wedding as long as there is true love in it.

There are also a lot of gothic people that believe in “pagan” religions that chose to have alternative ceremonies or non believers that just think that having chosen to expend the life together is an excellent reason for having a big party.

Whatever is the case, this “rite” symbolizes the union between the lovers even if the rite is not legally recognized.

The rite:

In lot of cases gothic weeding are really short ceremonies, limiting themselves to the pronunciation of the wedding vows, in all cases those wedding vows are presided by a celebrant that listen to them and formalize the union.

Unless you want the wedding to have legal recognition there is no need for the celebrant to have any special requisite.

I have read that in certain gothic rites the celebrant joins the lovers using a red ribbon, and then they drink from a coup full of red wine that symbolizes their blood. The last drop its spill over the altar for sealing the wedding.

If you don’t celebrate a Christian wedding I doubt that anyone will have any trouble in modifying the rite so it suits what you want it to be.

Victorian gothic wedding:

A Victorian gothic wedding it´s exactly what you expect it to be, it just emulates a Victorian epoch wedding, the bride usually wears a long dress full of velvet or satin, with a elaborated skirt and a corset over the dress.

Her hair  will be long curls with flowers. He will wear a long black coat with a top-hat. A gothic Victorian wedding should have a dark theme but that’s not necessary.

If you want to have a Christian gothic wedding this is probably your best option, the reason is that priest will probably look you with better if you wear an elegant Victorian dress than if you wear some clothes that they just don’t understand.

SETTING UP A GOTHIC WEDDING:

Now I will try to help you in setting up your perfect gothic wedding that you so desire.

THE DRESS:

We have a full article about that so I wont repeat myself :P, you can read it here:

THE WEDDING CAKE:

The cake on its own is able to give sense to your full gothic wedding or at least to give it that “special” touch that you wanted.

The trick here is to forget about the typical wedding cake with white and pink flowers and go for something “slightly” darker like bats, spider webs, skulls, chains… ¿someone said dark chocolate?, who makes the cake it’s something you will have to look for but believe me when I say it’s not hard to find, just check around in any place that sells cakes and you will find some that make cakes for bachelor parties, that’s it, I bet that one will make your perfect wedding cake.

THE RING:

The ring its, without doubt the hardest thing for offering an advice, the reason is that its too personal and you should search for something that suits you, you probably will want to chose a design that express what you feel for each other but don’t produce any special aversion for other non-gothic people that see it.

It’s not nice to have to remove the ring each time that your boss asks you to go to visit a client.

As some short of advice I recommend you to check for lack tungsten rings, I have never seen one but I have read that the result is a strong, dark black, shinny ring, simply perfect.

A black ring will probably express what you feel for each other and still be perfectly combinable with almost every cloth piece you could think of.

THE INVITATIONS:

The invitations are easy to make, but they will create a special ambient way before the people steps the weeding place (whatever it is), it should state clearly the gothic theme of the weeding so no one leave their best Goth dress at home.

The ideal would be to mix black red and white colors but feel free to use other tones or colors if you like them. You should be able to find several suitable invitation designs from Inet (I doubt that anyone would mind on you using it for such private event) but about her good idea is to make it more “yours” by creating it yourself, it’s pretty easy to create a perfect Goth invitation with a few photos of yourself and Photoshop.

For writing the inside text you should look for a gothic font, Word has some that could do the trick but if you want something a little bit better you should check in websites like this:

For giving that special touch to your invitations I recommend that you create a special signature (either individual or one for both of you) and sign it using an old plume.

DECORATION

This aspect it’s really important for creating the special ambient for your wedding, as the wedding cake this can, by itself, create the perfect gothic wedding, for that you should stop thinking on white and pink flowers and think on red wild flowers or you could just go for black roses (they always do the trick)

Another option is to go for velvet flowers, they looks great in red r black tones and you could always “reuse” them, obviously not for another wedding but for any other special event you want to celebrate.

Third option is to go for more alternate decorations, we could think, for example, in centerpieces formed with blackberry plant… full of meanings…

We could even think in unique centerpieces using half-dry plants with falling leaves, some people might say that’s not the most appropriate for a wedding but without doubt it will create an unique ambient.

You can complete the decoration with old chandeliers, long candles, skulls, chains, webs… anything that suits the theme that you chose.

The Music:

You could just go for a epic gothic music like the minimalist composition of Phillip Glass. He has published dozens of CDs and he compose music for every instrument you could imagine, from piano to drums.

Danny Elfmann, old friend of Tim Burton its another option with the music he created for the corpse bride, or nightmare before Christmas. You could use his album with music for a dark theatre, those ballads have turned themselves into one of the basic gothic songs. Maybe a little bit too dark for your non-gothic guests, but it´s romantic songs are the perfect accompaniment for your first kiss as husband and wife.

The French compositor Yann Tiersen wrote and recorded the music for the film Amelie. Defined by his unconventional use of typewrites and piano toys, Tiersen adds a disturbing beautifulness to your party.

The instrumental Scottish band Mogwai will make a great deal in a gothic ceremony – and not only because their names mean “ghost” or “devil” in Chinese but because Mogwai sais that their main influences are the Cure and Joy Division, they are known by their long guitar distorsions.

If you want something more classical you could add something like Bach, Tchaikovsky, Chopin or Mozart, playing with the melancholic side of a gothic wedding.

Feel free to choose a more dance music so your guests enjoy the party until later at night.

GOTHIC PRESSENTS

The last touch it’s something that will make your guests to remember your wedding forever:

  • Marissa Macabre  - Tungsten rings

For our wedding, I gave my husband a tungsten ring with gothic celtic crosses engraved all around it. I bought it at Helzberg Diamonds, which was at our local mall. I love his ring so much that I wish I had bought the female version for myself!
  • Rebecca Myers  - Our Wedding Plans
We have been planning our wedding for the last year and came up with a good balance between the Gothic feel and the classic wedding our families want. We are having two cakes (one is elegant and white, the other is a graveyard scene with the skelanimals bride and groom), and chose white gold rings, because we love the look of it. I am wearing a white lace dress that reminds me of a dress on gothic print paper I was once given. My girls and his guys are wearing black with dark purple accents, he is wearing a black suit with purple detailing. Our ring bearer and flower girl will be a balance of black and lilac. And my walk down the isle will be to Jack And Sally's song from Nightmare before Christmas.

@ rebecca, I wanted to do something similar for my daughters wedding as far as the grooms cake went. For her cake I felt she should pick that out her self. I did find a preacher who actually understood the goth cultur. He is more than willing to do the ceremony the way the kids want it. I got really lucky on this one. So many people totally misunderstand this culture.
