A few hours ago, surfing the net I found a link in a news Web site to an article making jokes about Goths in summer, far from upsetting I decided that it was a good point for inspiriting an article for this Web…
As I said in the heading, all this was born thanks to a stupid article published in a web making jokes about Goth people migrating to northern latitudes to avoid the heat of the summer… although I suppose that someone might find it funny I think it’s quite insulting to compare Goth people with migrating animals…. Anyway, far from getting upset I decided to create something useful based in the inspiration that this guys offers us.
Yes: Gothic people is able to see beauty where it seems not to be , to create art with stuff that doesn’t seems to be the adequate items for doing it and even receive inspiration from the biggest stupidities for creating something interesting.
So let’s get to work ;).
In a perfect world we would live in permanent autumn, unluckily for us there are other seasons (yeah I know biologists say that seasons are needed for the life as we know it… but hey those are minor problems :P), so we have no choice but to live with summer and it’s heat.
The first problem is that most part of the gothic dressing is not well suited for handling heat, in deed black color is quite good trapping solar radiation and therefore heating itself.
But we can’t forget that pale skin is more sensible to solar burning and… let’s assume it, it’s hard to keep a Goth aspect when you are red as an apple or even worst when your skin starts to peel.
For handling the clothe issue there is a simple idea that should work, it consists in wearing light or silky clothes in white tones, ivory or grays, it’s harder to find but the truth is that it could give us the aspect of a underworld princess that I personally love.
If we don’t have access to such clothes or pale colors don’t suits us we don’t have to abandon all hope yet, there is plenty of black clothes that is adequate for summer times, we can think in light clothes like wide trousers, shirts, skirts or mini-skirts and in general every accessories made from fishnet (shirts, globes, tights or necklaces).
Men have a slightly harder time for finding summer gothy clothes, finding non-black clothes is going to be harder (although it’s possible to find gray clothes specially if you look into punk themed clothes) and possibly the lighter you are going to find it’s a black light trousers and a sleeve-less shirt… try to avoid heavy leather boots.
A perfect accessory in both cases it’s a parasol specially if your clothes are Victorian themed, there are cheap and expensive parasols, made from paper to silk, but maybe your best option is to pick and umbrella and decorate it in a way that express what you wear inside yourself.
Parasols are also the coolest defense possible against people arguing that they wont wear black clothes because of the sun heating, in deed parasols are much better stopping sunlight heating than white clothes so you could always say that if they are really interested in not overheating then they should wear whatever clothes they want and use a parasol, it’s more effective and will prevent sun burning.
Lastly sun heating can do an ugly job to your makeup, Foundation get’s cranky and dry, eyeliner get blurred and run, and mascara tends to meld and form unpleasant lumps…
The obvious approach is to try to reduce the amount of makeup over our face, apply only a thin layer of translucent powder, try to apply less amount of eyeliner or mascara or try one of those waterproof makeup, in general they are slightly worst than regular makeup but they will resist better your skin sweating and heat, there is also theatre makeup available (generally wet applications) that makeup is made for supporting theatre illumination heat and sweating of physical activities.
Finally try to always apply a sunblock, it will preserve your pale skin and also will protect you against undesired sun effects… “yes I could be a little bit warmer with this black clothes but at least I do what’s in my hand for not getting burned…”
And that’s all I wanted to post today… I would copy the text that inspired me for this article but it’s in Spanish so I don’t think it’s necessary to post it…
Hope you liked this article ;).
