After one week “to forget” I come back with a new article about a new Spanish gothic designer, I think that everybody deserves to be helped when they start a new project (specially during this hard times), If you know of anyone who is starting something like this in you country, please let us know… In the meantime, let´s meet…
Susana Ribeiro (Gothic clothes designer)
Some days ago, Susana Ribeiro added our website to his facebook because of the launching of her new Web site, and along with it, the launch of her new gothic clothes line designed 100% by herself. Sincerely I feel real admiration for all this people that decides to do that last steep and work on what they want and what define themselves as persons… specially during this economic uncertainty days… Susana gave me the opportunity to make my first interview… each day I feel a little more as a journalist freelance and less as a website owner… anyway, please accept my apologies for any noob error that I might have committed. Let’s learn a little bit more about this magnificent gothic designer and her work. - We would like to know a little bit about your own history, did you worked previously in anything related with gothic culture? No, It’s the first time that I do something like this in a professional behavior. - When did you noticed that the artist that was inside wanted to come outside? After working in several companies in which there weren’t any kind of creativity liberty and you had to work on stuff that has nothing to do with your own style… you can’t avoid thinking on the day in which you are going to be able to work in what you really like and feel. For some circumstances I decided that the day had come and well, no one said that it was going to be easy but if you don’t try you’ll never know if you are able to do it.
- In the middle of this “perfect storm” that is the economical crisis you decided to make this last steep and create your own gothic clothes line… how does it feels?
I feel really satisfied of being able to do what I always wanted to do, I felt that it was the moment to start the project and although the crisis doesn’t help a lot, I’m confident that everything is going to end well.
- Why you decided to create a gothic clothe line instead of any other kind of clothes?
I always liked gothic aesthetics and, although I started to dress like that relatively a little time ago, I always liked everything related with gothic culture.
- Could you define in general lines how is the creative process since the idea of a design crosses your mind until it’s a reality?
The creative issue it’s not an easy task, you don’t always have the ideas you are looking for and you never know when the inspiration it’s going to come, that because I always wear a small block… just in case. I try to focus on a single theme that unified the collection and when I have a few sketches I look to them all. When I’m happy with the result I chose fabrics and the rest it’s a mechanical work: create the patterns and sew the clothes.
- Where do you get the inspirations for your designs?
I like to chose the inspiration from some kind of tale and ambient the clothes in the epoch of it, when a few ideas start to come as I’m reading it. For example the inspiration of this collection comes from “El retrato de Dorian Gray”, as I wanted to base it in England Victorian epoch.
- Any other special inspiration?
As I said, Victorian epoch is always present in my collections but you can also find other influences like Japanese culture, I like that culture a lot.
- Someone asked you to create a special model imitating an illustration, the dressing of a character or something similar?
Not yet, but cossplay is another stuff that I would like to do. In deed I always dreamed to create clothing’s for theatre, it could be said that I like to transmit the characteristics and mood of certain character only by the clothes he is wearing.
- And keeping a little bit with the theme… do you make customs designs? modifications on your own designs that clients might ask or exclusive design that they could want?
Sure, anything they want to create its perfect for me, they just tell me what they want and I in base to their desires create a design and pattern, if they like it we can go for it. Those clothing are unique and therefore slightly more expensive.
