Today in gothic culture we are going to talk about very special clothes, today we going to talk about the…
Corset
First a little bit of history: The Corset as we know it was invented in Paris in 1830s, but there exists older versions of it that date from XVI century, those ancient versions were formed by a single bodice tied at the back and were reserved to nobility. During century XVIII things changed and corsets started to be much more popular, they covered most part of the back while being under burst in the front, that made them to emphasize busts while pulling back shoulders. Almost all corsets were lazed in the back using a single cord that runner across all eyelets from upside to downwards, that made that for being able to tie them, the wearer must hold himself to something while other people pulled the cord, it was completely impossible that a single person tied one of those without help. In deed putting on one of those was funny. Curiously it was men who first started to wear this piece of clothe in 1830s, that male fashion persisted until 1840 and started to decay, in 1850s the only men still wearing it did it because backaches. Coincidentally in 1840s women started to use corsets and some times later it was popularised in all social classes, in deed corset was the first piece of clothe ever that was mass produced in response of a growing demand. The corset was in the peak of fashion until 1920s when people started to lose its interest in them, it survived though as lingerie, since then it has suffered lot of changes and resurrection in modern fashion.
Corsets never abandoned completely modern society, in deed we can see them in lot of modern films as “Van Helsing” or “Underworld”
Why to wear corsets:
Main use for corsets is fashion, in general, main use of corsets is to tighten the stomach area favouring feminine curves.
Men use for corsets is to create a much more slender and thin figure, we can find some modern corsets for men, here is some examples of gothic corsets for men, it would look great on your boyfriend… ¿doesn’t it?.
In general we can say that there exists 2 kinds of corsets: under burst and over bust both of them tend to end around the waist but that isn’t always the case.
¿how to walk with that?
Well I have seen other models that being similar to that one only tie the cord until the knees that makes possible to walk with small steeps while leaving the rest of the dress open beneath the knees.
There are corsets that start over the shoulders too
Corsets have room in modern medicine too, in general they are used to correct problems in the back or combat illness like scoliosis, the point is that a well made corset hold the back “in place” and works for your back muscles which means they get much less stress and tension.
Lastly we can’t forget the use of the corset as sexual fetishes (as if the above wasnt one of them...):
Corset Caring:
Even being a strong piece of clothes corset require a lot of caring, the reason is that a tied corset supports a lot of tension and in its in bad state it’s possible that it gets broken.
Let’s see some caring tips for corsets:
After wearing a corset its convenient to aerate it and use a piece of cloth to clean the inside, a corset needs dry washing and using this tip you will extend the period between each washing.
Another good tip is to wear some clothe under the corset, that way you will prevent sweat to attack it too much.
Always before putting on or removing a corset make sure that the laze is completely removed, corsets supports the tension they hold because they distribute the strength all over their surface, that means that if you loosen some cords but others are still in tension those last one will hold all the strength you create for removing it and they could get broken (best case) or rip the corset itself.
Avoid direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time, if you need to dry it, let it dry in shadows, sunlight will make most clothes to lose flexibility, that doesn’t mean that the corset will get broken because you dry it once in sunlight but it will make it more uncomfortable to wear and will shorten its life time.
How to put on a corset:
I’m not going to write a tutorial on how to put on a corset, instead of that ill leave you with an example, I bet males will like it.
We will keep talking about corsets in deed I have a tutorial on how to make you own corset, if you are interested in that leave me a message here so I give it priority over other stuff.
