Yesterday we talked about gothic tattoo, and while this is not exactly tattooing, we are going to continue the series of articles about tattoos with this article…
What the hell is body modification? Well, if you need to make that question, then probably don’t want to know the answer, but here is a rather “technical” answer for your question:
Body modification it’s the action of permanently modification your body for non medical reasons.
What are those reasons then? Well, if you need to make that question then this article it’s probably not for you, but here is an answer for that too: Aesthetical reasons, cultural reasons (Do you know that African tribe who enlarge their woman necks using rings?), personal reasons…
There is a special body modification technique known as “body art” which involves the modification of any part of your body for aesthetical reasons.
If you are clever enough at this point you must have noticed that Aesthetic surgery falls into the concept of body modification or body art, well, while that’s true in this article we aren’t going to talk about Aesthetic clinics but about something slightly more extreme.
“disfiguration” (subjective term) and “mutilation” (that’s it’s an objective terms and its used when certain limb losses it’s functionality or it gets severely damaged permanently) are terms commonly used by the oppositors of this tendency specially for those that are non consensual or are done before the child can take a decision on his own (think on religions not in Goth people)
But talking about Goth people and gothic body modification... let’s see the job of Jonathan Martinez, who shows us some of his job so we can take a look into the Goth side of the body modification:
Ear shaping
Scarification
Scarification is a term tat comes from the word “scar”, in mundane words it’s the action of Tattooing yourself by the bad healing of an open wound… and it hurts…
The most common historical use of the scarification was the slave marking using hot irons, luckily for us, that’s not longer used for scarification techniques.
Before getting into the scarification you must know that scarification it’s not a very precise art, the reason is that it’s the body who created the scar not the artists, and each body tends to heal in a different way, not even 2 wounds of the same body heals in the same way.
Another problem is that in general lines the wounds then to get wide during the healing which makes almost impossible to create any detail at all which tends to mend with the rest of the drawing.
That also means that you can make a small scarification (like you can do a small tattoo), if you want to have more than a line or a circle scar, then you need to leave a quite wide area of your body for the artist to work (an arm, your back or a leg, for example).
I think that I already said it, but: It hurts, and not only while the artists it’s opening the wound, in deed part of the scarification process consists in not letting the body heal the wound properly so you get a quite decent scar, instead of a healthy healing… and that hurts once more.
Body implants:
Tongue splitting:
Tongue splitting it’s a type of body modification that consists in dividing the tongue in two, in most cases this is done by traditional surgery or using a surgery laser.
In some cases, previously to the bifurcation, the artists implant a wide ring in the base of the tongue splitting, and waits until it heals, that simplifies the surgery and the later heal of the tongue but creates a different visual effect than what it’s achieved using only the surgery.
If you have real problems with the surgery or the laser, let’s say that there is a way more hurting process for getting the same result, it consists in increasing the side of the tongue ring over time, it’s a time consuming process and it hurts way more than the surgery… but hey… at least it’s an option.
All the modifications that you see in this article (but the heading one) are works done by Jonathan Martinez that leaves us his biography (In Spanish, sorry) so you can check his profile.
Any doubt that you might have about body modification should be asked to him or to anyone in your country that knows about this stuff, I can’t ensure that he speak English well, in case you have problems with that, forward me your questions and I’ll translate them for him
