I was looking for a group to Start the music section of this Web and i Wasn’t sure Witch one to choose, alter thinking a bit about it I finally choose this one because its career serves as inspiration for me and this site…
For those that doesn’t know the group Epica its a gothic-metal Nederland’s band, but it doesn’t matter what I say the best you can do for knowing them is listen their music
If you like this band and you want to know them from their beginnings you’ll have to go back until April 2002, it was then when Mark Jensen (member of After Forever) founded the band under the name of Sahara Dust.
In those days the voice of the group was Helena Michaelsen (Trail of Tears), it wasn’t until October 2002 that Mark Jensen invited Simone Simons to the and, by those days Simone only had 17 years old and she was girlfriend of Mark. I’m not sure if that last thing motivated in one way or another the change of vocalist but what it’s clearly true is that it was the correct decision according to the band career.
What it seems clear is that the change of vocalist motivated the change of the band name to “Epica” in honour to the band Kamelot of Witch most of Epica members where real fans.
In November Epica started to record their first album in Rotterdam, that Album was called “Cry for the moon” and it was launched only a month latters and finally just next month they presented their first live in Tilburg.
I suppose that speed in their job were motivated by Mark veterany in musical battles, but sincerely you have to check the speed of their events, in October a fresh vocalist without much experience joins the band, only a month later they were recording their first album and just next month they start with live concerts, I’m sure this explains the fast progression of the band.
Not happy with the mess they have created until then in January 2003 (so… just a month later…) they started to record their second album in Germany, that new Album would be called “The phantom Agony”.
Trying to write in a single article all the movements of the band would be a problem because that rhythm they had in their first days have not stopped at all since then, they have been involved in hundreds of interviews, live concerts and records studios recording 6 full albums, 6 singles and some Promotional DvDs. Not bad considering the time elapsed since the band was formed.
But, how they do it? They compose while travelling in a tour? Well that’s what it seems considering that their second album “Consign to Oblivion” was recorded and released during their tour in 2005, something to be admired.
For seeing their full work I recommend to check their official Web site: http://www.epica.nl/?page=disco
Leaving aside the band biography and returning to their music I have to say that Epica is influenced by (couldn’t be otherwise) gothic-metal but it also have influences from cine music composed by Danny Elfman or Hans Zimmer.
I have little more to say, if you really like the group you have to know that it exists “The Road To Paradiso”, It’s a job that was released in 2006 and it contains the band history in words as well as hundreds of images took by the band members, professional photographers and even fans that contributed to it with their own photos or comments, that book also contains a unique CD with inedited songs, live music and demo records.
A truly precious stone for real fans.
I leave you with another Epica song, if you want more you just have to go to their youtube channel that you have just a little below.
