UPDATE 20/06/2012

The Wave Gothic treffen 2011 is over, I had to raise some images or videos last week about it but in the end things got complicated and I couldn’t do it, anyway the facts is that if you didn’t did it yet, you should take a look to the wonderful and great ambient that you can find in Leipzig during those days.

There never was such a huge concentration of corsets, plataform boots and umbrellas ina single city.

I leave you with a few videos that resume what it was (other than the concerts, you have to live that):

If after that you are not saving money for going to Leipzig next year… I’m not sure what are you thinking on.

If you decide to go, you should remember this:

- If you want to have any chance of finding a hotel or similar accommodation (other than a tent), then you should reserve your room before November or you are risking yourself of running out of rooms.

- The tickets should be sold by the organization in their Web site around march/April.

- If you have a band and want to play at WGT that’s about the adequate time to let them know that you are interested, they allow tons of bands to play and most of them are not well known bands, you might not get a big scenario but you have a chance of they making you room for playing your music.

- Once you have bought your tickets you should start moving for getting your flight to Leipzig, finding a trip to Leipzig is hard but there is always the option of going first to Berlin and then picking a train to Leipzig, that allow you to visit Berlin, which is really a cool place for Goth people (http://www.gothic-culture.com/europe/9-gothic-tourism-in-berlin.html)

- The tikets for the festival will be shipped to your home about a month before the kickoff, they will start sending to the farthest countries first.

That’s all for WGT 2011, Ill keep you updated on news for the 2012 edition.

UPDATE 23-03-2011

Here is an important update for those of you that pretend to get to Leipzig using your car or a hired car (As written to me by the organization):

Since the 1st of March 2011 about 60 percent of the urban area of
Leipzig have been declared a "low emission zone" to protect the
environment against air pollution.
Therefore within this zone only vehicles are allowed which have an
official green sticker placed on the front windscreen. To obtain such
a sticker, certain characteristics of the vehicle have to be met (i.e.
age, type of fuel, diesel particulate filter etc.). This regulation is
also valid for
foreigners who travel to Leipzig by car.
If you cannot show a valid sticker during a traffic check, you will
have to pay a fine of 40,- Euros.

The stickers are available for about 5,- Euros at most car repair
shops in Germany or via internet, e.g. the website of TÜV-Nord (6,-
Euros):
http://www.tuev-nord.de/SID-33E6B910-077E8A31/de/verkehr/Order_form_ENGLISH_8761.htm

ATTENTION: The agra-area with parking lot and camping site can be
reached via A38 / B2 without having to enter the "low emission zone"!
(Please see the map of the zone below)
That means it is possible for visitors to park their vehicle at the
agra-parking lot (you will need a WGT parking ticket in this case,
which can also be obtained on location) and
reach all other locations by public transport.

There is yet another update on the bands that are going to play on the WTG 2011, so I updated the list of bands by country too.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: For those that don’t know what the hell is this… this is heaven, keep reading.

For the rest:

What do we know now?

We know the most important information: ¡¡the days in which it’s going t take place!! And some other stuff:

Wave Gothic Treffen 2011 will open it’s gates on 10th June and will close on 13th June, but I have a press note that says that there will be an inauguration concert on Thursday the 9th for commemorating that this year is the 20th edition (Yeah, this is the 20th edition)

The following bands will play in that concert:

AGE OF HEAVEN

SWEET WILLIAM

THE ETERNAL AFFLICT

DAS ICH

HENKE Performing songs of GOETHES ERBEN

And the exclusive performance of

LOVE LIKE BLOOD (First live show since 1999!).

The concert starts at 6PM in 9th June in AGRA-Halle 2

Maybe some of you are wondering who the hell are they… Well, those are the bands that played in the very first Wave Gothic Treffen festival in 1992.

Anyway, if you check the bands that played in the last edition you will find that most of the bands are quite “modest”, the fact is that in this festival you will be able to listen to a lot of refreshing music and they don’t close any door to anyone.

So if you have a band… and want to play in the Wave Gothic treffen 2011… you’ll do well in moving now…

- Who is going to perform during 2011 edition?

We will keep updating the list in the future as more news arose, also if you want to create an article for any of this bands (even if you are a member of it) please forward to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it your article and we will see it published really soon with a link to the bands website and a link here so anyone who checks this page is able to learn about the bands (I wont have time for doing all this bands by myself, although ill try to do some).

Wave gothic treffen 2011

As I said, as I receive more information I will keep updating this article, for now I leave you with the most frequent asked questions that I wrote last year.

All this information it’s “not official” that I have gathered from forums and fan sites to please don’t consider it 100% reliable but it will help making out self a idea of what to expect.

-         What’s Treffen Gothic Festival?

Officially WTG is a Goth music festival but sincerely I think that its waaaaaaay more than that, In deed it’s the biggest Goth event in the world, the event gathers, once each year everything that its related with the Goth movement and its culture, that makes it terrible interesting.

In deed I would bet that it’s possible to go to WTG without steeping a single concert and yet have a complete experience sinking in the Goth ambient, checking the cinema projection, shopping and going to the events not musically related… but hey… that doesn’t mean that if we go there we have to miss the concerts of course.

-         When will be the 2010 tickets for sale?

Not know yet, but when available you will be able to get them here:

http://www.wave-gotik-treffen.de/english/karten.php

-         Is there any kind of map about the festival places?

There exists a map of the old editions and there will be a 2011 map but we don’t expect many changes so you could start checking the old map and still get a clear idea of where are you going to be, you can check the map HERE although its in German.

-         It’s alcohol and food cheap?

Food and beer in Germany is cheap, and the festival is located inside the city so it’s possible to use Leipzig locals for buying food and drinks, that mean it’s possible to eat and get drunk before entering the festival places where this kind of stuff is a little expensive.

It’s not allowed to enter festival locations with outside drinks and it’s not allowed to enter if you are clearly drunk, so try to maintain decorum until you are inside.

-        City transport.

WTG ticket allow you to use the city tram for free and that will let you get to most festival points, it seems that there are a few festival locations outside of that transportation system

Here is a video of the medieval area just for breaking a bit the reading.

Experience says that after every concert public transportation gets crowded, some people prefer to have a bicycle for moving through Leipzig, Leipzig it’s pretty flat and it’s possible to move around with a bicycle but it’s illegal to drive it if you are drunk, and you could get finned if you are catched in doing it.

-         How can I get to Leipzig?

The direct approach for getting there is to use Ryan air although it seems that local time flights are not the best in the world, also if you come from a distant place the preferred way to get there is using plane for getting to Berlin and then train from Berlin to Leipzig.

Lot of people visit Berlin in the previous days before going to Leipzig, it’s a great idea to do so, if you like that plan you should check the gothic tourism article that I wrote some months ago HERE.

-         Its hard to get a room?

Hotels and the like tends to get completed pretty fast and nowadays it’s probably complicated to get a room, lot of people has their room booked way before having their festival tickets, some people recommend to start looking for room in “the sleepy lion” and “Central Globettroter”.

There exists camping areas and they have a kindergarden at your disposal you can leave your little Goths at good care while getting lost in the festival.

-         How the hell do you say “Do you have this corset in size…” in German?

Good news is that mot Germans speak English good enough for understanding you in English so you can just speak in English and they will hand you the correct size for your corset.

-         How much money it’s needed in the festival?

Well if you already have a place to sleep and the transportation is paid then living in Germany is cheap.

The cheapest configuration would be to eat fast food and buy drink in supermarkets and such for drinking in wherever you sleep. that could probably be done for 30€/day for each person, but a most realistic number would be 40-80€/day, if you are going to drink a lot and want to get to real restaurants for eating then you could expend 100+ each day without problems.

I think those are the most common questions I have read, I only have to say that Leipzig is a Goth paradise, people wont look at you as if you were crazy no matter how are you dressed, they wont evade you, and they wont treat you as if you had a contagious disease, in deed most Leipzig people understood that we are good people and don’t want to harm anyone, hope that spirit expand to other locations soon.

It’s hard to be eccentric in a place where being eccentric it’s quite centric.
