Gothic holy week? Is that possible?

Dance of Death in Verges

dance of death in verges

I’m not sure if it’s possible or not, but I’m sure that there is an spectacle that deserves our attention, we can see it every holy Thursday (so we’ll have to wait for next year for next opportunity) and it recovers an old an original tradition of the old middle ages, it was common in all European territory… the dance of death.

This procession it’s an expression of the traditional Catalan theatre in Spain and it’s reproduced ever year in front of thousands of citizens and visitors, it consists in a serial of gloomy skeletons that jumps in a special circular dance accompanied by several other people dressed in black tunics and skeletal masks, the later wears a drum that creates the ritm for such particular dance.

The presence of the scythe, dust and clocks reminds us that we all have to finally die.

This traditional procession is declared of national interest and it takes place first inside the town main plaza between the walls and medieval fortifications (you have to pay to get inside) and then it goes along some town streets until it gets to a local church.
